BRSC Academy
Benefits of BRSC Academy
Would you like for your child to be a more confident player? The purpose of the BRSC Academy program is to free players from the stress of playing to win. We want players to improve technically and use creativity and improvisation to guide their way through the game.
Touches on the ball are a critical component of player development. Our professional coaches build each session to help develop each child’s confidence with the ball. While teams work on overall team development, the Academy focuses specifically on the player and ways to improve his or her skills.
The cost is $350/player for an 11 week season. Players train three days a week with playdates for the older age groups.
The Burbank Program is open to boys and girls five to sixteen years old. BRSC’s new Zachary Academy program is open to boys and girls eight to fourteen years old. Register here for Burbank Academy and here for Zachary Academy.

BRSC Introduces Academy Program to Zachary
Due to the growth of our Zachary campus and requests of the community, BRSC will introduce the Academy program to Flanacher Road Park for the Spring 2020 season.
BRSC Academy is for the players and parents who are looking for a structured training and game environment focused around player development.
Baton Rouge Soccer Club Executive Director Louie Smothermon is excited about the opportunity to implement a proven program for player development at a third BRSC campus. “We are incredibly pleased with the growth of our Zachary campus and feel the addition of the Academy program to Flanacher Road Park is the next logical step for the growth of soccer in Zachary.”
The Zachary program is open to boys and girls ages 9-13. BRSC conducts each session with professional Academy Coaches who follow the Academy Pathway and Curriculum.
The season will begin on February 3, 2020, and will consist of three sessions per week for ten weeks. Training will take place Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 6 – 7:30 pm at Flanacher Road Park. Two days per week will focus on individual skill development and one day on small-sided games.
Players will need to purchase the Academy uniform from Third Coast Soccer. Due to the frequency of training, we advise parents to buy more than one jersey.
Parents interested in learning more about the Academy Program can visit the BRSC Academy Overview. Registration is currently open for all Academy programming at Burbank, Independence, and Zachary through Blue Sombrero.
What is the Academy Program?
BRSC Academy is a developmental program that focuses on player growth, not winning games. Unlike recreational soccer, players are not on a team. Instead, we group players in pools based on age and skill level. This player movement allows our Academy coaches the ability to switch players around to put them in groups best suited to their ability. It also provides coaches with the ability to challenge players based on the goals of the session.
Players train three days a week for 11 – 12 weeks under the instruction of professional BRSC coaches. All coaches follow the Academy Pathway and approved curriculum. Our coaches adhere to a strict coaching paradigm created so that every child, regardless of ability, is facing an appropriate level of challenge.
Each season’s training format will begin with three weeks of training in technical stations, followed by three weeks of a whole-part-whole method, four weeks of Academy Session, and two weeks of “let them play” SSGs.
BRSC bases its Academy system on those of professional club soccer systems seen around the world. Since the focus is on development, players are free to experiment without the fear of losing a game. This freedom encourages kids to be creative, take risks, and become more proficient with the ball. This approach helps create quick-thinking, confident players who will be better prepared to transition to competitive play.
Instead of games against other teams, the Academy staff divide players in the program into free-flowing groups to play Intra-Squad Games (ISG). ISGs are small-sided games held once a week. The small-sided games allow our staff the ability to manipulate the number of players, size of the field, and conditions/restrictions of the games to highlight the Principles of Play that we want to focus on at that time.
BRSC Academy is available at Burbank for boys and girls aged 5 – 16. The Zachary Academy is open to players 8 – 14. The spring 2020 season will begin on February 10th and conclude on April 30th.
