LA HB184 What you need to know

by Trenton Bland | Aug 13, 2019
LA HB184 prohibits harassment of officials at, or in proximity to athletic events, as well as entering or remaining at an athletic contest after being forbidden.

IMPORTANT NOTES FROM LA HB184

   •   Makes it a crime to harass contest officials involved with recreation or secondary school-based sports.
   •   HB 184 was made effective as of August 1, 2019.
   •   Abuse from fans is a key reason why high school associations and recreation groups have trouble recruiting and retaining officials.
   •   This law also protects coaches, school administrators, instructors, staff personnel, and recreation personnel.
   •   The boundary of enforcement goes beyond the fields and protects “contest officials” in the immediate vicinity of the school or recreation event, including parking lots.
   •   Those charged can be fined up to $500 and sentenced to 90 days in jail. They must perform 40 hours of community service and attend court-approved anger management.
   •   Individuals ejected and ordered to leave the facility but do not, can be fined up to $500 and sentenced to as much as six months in jail.
