RAISING CANE'S COACHING CERTIFICATION PROGRAM

Vision:

Enhancing the overall developmental cycle thus developing better coaches, educating parents, developing better players, instilling a greater, passion, enjoyment and appreciation for the sport.

Our Mission:

To provide the most rewarding soccer experience to our youth membership by enhancing the soccer knowledge of every registered BRSC volunteer coach.

Prior to the start of the 2012 fall season we implemented a new coaching “certification program” for all registered BRSC coaches. We had 130 Pre-K through 4th grade coaches participate in our inaugural certification program, which exceeded our expectations. This fall coaches will have the opportunity to attend a certification clinic prior to coaching within any of our leagues for players/teams Pre-K through 12 grade. If you are a current BRSC coach, or think you might be interested in becoming a coach, this information is for you! Please read on.

One of the most important volunteers in youth sports is “The Parent Coach." The quality of coaching determines the quality of the overall athletic experience for each player and parent. A good coach not only teaches the game, but also focuses on the development of the “whole person” while cultivating a FUN environment! He/she is a role model, instills good habits, and teaches a lot of life lessons through the sport. Conversely, the negative impact of poor coaching can have long term effects on young athletes, both in terms of their continuing interest in the sport and maintaining an active lifestyle in general. We have all heard the stories of families with bad experiences in youth sports.

We are truly privileged to have hundreds of volunteer coaches within BRSC. The majority of these coaches are well intentioned and have a good grasp of the game of soccer.  If they don’t, we offer ample opportunities such as clinics, coaching courses and other resources to obtain technical sport-related coaching knowledge. However, it must be noted that most volunteer youth coaches do not possess training and experience in how to coach kids from a motivational, psychological or developmental perspective.

What is developmentally appropriate for a particular age?

What are ways to foster a positive motivational climate that increases the likelihood of enjoyment and skill development?

How should you give feedback?

These are just a few of the issues that impact “how” one coaches.

Additionally, we will strongly encourage all registered Assistant Coaches be certified as well.

So what is the certification program?

Coaches will obtain certification from participating in a clinic for the age group they are currently registered for or plan on coaching. These clinics will be offered prior to the start of the fall and spring season. These clinics will be supervised and instructed by BRSC’s Director of Coaching, Marvin Smith who is currently a National Academy Staff Instructor for the National Soccer Coaches Association of America-NSCAA. Marvin has spent the past seven years traveling around the United States instructing NSCAA Diploma coaching courses.  He will be assisted by a very well qualified BRSC coaching staff as well as other professionals with backgrounds in sports psychology, child psychology, nutrition, sports safety and prevention. Pre- registration is required to ensure we have a good-staff-to coach ratio and correct number of coaches’ packets. To register, simply email your name, team name, age group and shirt size, (i.e. Bob James, Tigers, 2nd grade boys, large) to jmcreynolds@brsoccer.org at least two days prior to clinic date.

Upon completion each coach will receive the following.

*  A BRSC Coaching Certificate

*  An Adidas T-shirt or polo

*  Free coaching aids, books, DVDs, handouts

We appreciate our volunteer coaches immensely and realize this is one more expectation that we are placing on them. However, as a club we believe it reasonable to ask our coaches to attend a clinic in an effort to improve the experience for our young soccer players. We hope you will agree! After all, the kids depend on the coaches, and the parents entrust their kids to us. The importance of the player / coach relationship is critical to the overall BRSC soccer experience.

Please send any questions regarding the clinics or the certification expectation to jmcreynolds@brsoccer.org.
